In 2017, the 500th anniversary of the Reformation will be celebrated. The Reformation is a vital event of both German and European history whose long-term influence on religion, art and culture can still be observed till this day. In honor of this occasion, several large exhibitions will be staged in Germany, interpreting the Reformation in different ways in terms of its preconditions, transformational processes and consequences.
This provides an opportunity for curators, museologists, (art) historians and theologians to comparatively analyse the different exhibitions regarding their political and scholarly concepts in focus, interpretation and design. Is the Reformation seen primarily as a religious or a political event? How can complex historical interrelations be made comprehensible? How do the exhibitions relate to phenomena like secularism or religious radicalism in modern societies? What is the reformation’s significance for today’s political, cultural and religious discussions?
The topic “anniversary-exhibitions”, although of increasing importance, has rarely been subject to scholarly reflexion. The Museology Workshop is addressed to young scholars with intended careers as curators, (art) historians and theologians, who would like to work on the propagation and transfer of scholarly knowledge. In cooperation with renowned experts from universities and museums, the different exhibition concepts in Berlin, Coburg, Nuremberg, Wittenberg and Eisenach (Wartburg) will be scrutinized with the aim of developing successful concepts for own exhibitions. The workshop will combine scholarly reflexion and fieldwork both at Erlangen University and at the exhibitions, where
discussion with the curators will take place. The participants will gain privileged insight into several German academic and cultural institutions. They are expected to present a paper on the subject of the workshop.
The workshop is open to highly qualified master- and PhD-students. The course will be conducted in both German and English. At minimum, all participants should possess sufficient German to read course materials and understand lectures and discussions. All travel costs (from the home institution) to Erlangen up to the maximum amount allowed by DAAD will be reimbursed. In addition, lodging and associated travel costs within Germany during the course will be fully covered.
